Rev.Fr.Adrian caussanel

Rev. Fr. Adrian Caussanel, S.J. (1850–1930), was a French Jesuit missionary who dedicated his life to service in South India. He is most notably recognized as the founder of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a religious congregation that continues to operate schools, dispensaries, and social centers across Tamil Nadu. Key Life Facts Birth & Early Life: Born in France in 1850. Missionary Work: He arrived in Tuticorin (Thoothukudi) in 1889 and served the erstwhile Tinnevelly District until his death in 1930. Death: He passed away on January 25, 1930. In religious circles, this is often commemorated as his "Heavenly Birth." Major Contributions Founding of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart: On February 11, 1903, at Irudayakulam, he founded this indigenous congregation. Its mission was to provide "Good News to the Poor" through education and social action. Education: He was one of the key founders of St. Xavier’s College, Palayamkottai, a premier educational institution in South India. Historical Documentation: He wrote "Historical Notes on Tinnevelly District," which includes significant ethnographic observations about local communities like the Paravas, whom he deeply admired for their resilience. Social Reform: He worked extensively with marginalized communities, including the Kani and Pazhingar tribal people, helping them establish housing, education, and vocational training. The "Caussanel Plaster" In local culture, Fr. Caussanel is also remembered for a medicinal recipe known as the "Caussanel Plaster" (or Plasthiri). It was a blackish-brown substance used to treat boils and swellings. It is still prepared and distributed by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart at their dispensaries today.
